St. Thomas Elevated Park
York Urbanist has worked with a+LiNK Architecture to develop plans for this bold endeavour by the OnTrack community group. OnTrack bought, preserved and is now transforming the city’s rail bridge. Construction of the St. Thomas Elevated Park is expected to begin by April, 2017.
Inspired by NYC’s Highline this bridge will become a destination. It will commemorate the rail heritage on which St. Thomas is founded. Most importantly, it will convert a fenced and empty relic into a park with vistas north and south. The park has been opened as the site of annual summer picnics whose tickets had to be limited by demand. The TransCanada Trail route follows the ground beneath the bridge. The bridge will become an experience for cyclists and hikers like none other in Southern Ontario.
