All around us, we are being told that obesity is one of the greatest killers of our generation. Inactivity leads to diabetes, joint problems, and heart disease. Land use planning has a part in avoiding this plague on our society. It makes us question if we are placing importance enough on the planning and development of active living spaces.
In Ontario, new development is required to dedicate 5% of development land to parks. In most jurisdictions, this does not include hazard lands such as watercourses and wetlands. This is satisfactory to provide active living space, IF the parks and hazard lands are planned to encourage their use. The subsections of this Parks section help to articulate the Park’s role in the health of the nation.
